The STEAL!

Tonight we all went to Safeway to use my coupons with the sale they were having on cereal. Why did we all go? Well, it was a limit of 20 and I had more coupons than that to use with the sale so Shane had a cart and I did so we could check out seperately and I could stock up on cereal, which we needed. The sale was on selected General Mills cereals and Nature Valley granola bars. The ad even specified that it was on regular Cheerios, but when we got to the store, there wasn't the sale sign posted in front of the Cheerios. I saw the store assistant manager while I was shopping, showed him the ad and the Cheerios and he said that he would grant me the ad price The sale was buy 4 boxes, get $4 off, however I had six boxes of Cheerios along with some other cereal and Nature Valley bars. I made sure to give Shane the easy coupons that would easily go through so we wouldn't have to do the explaining. When I got to the register that I young man was working, the manager came up to open another check out lane and ask the kid how much, the cereal was ringing up as, which is wasn't ringing up at the sale price, so the manager told the kid to key in $4 off. I explained to the kid that I had six boxes, 2 boxes were combined with other cereal to make the $4, so I needed to make sure I got the correct price on those. The kid turns to the manager and tells him and the kid says, "So its basically $1 off per item" and the manager replies "No, you buy 4 and save $4" (Yes, I know its the same thing and the kid was right) So, the kid asks what he needs to do to the manager because I wouldn't get my other items on sale with the Cheerios and asks if he should just take off $16, which the manager replies yeah, okay. Which I really don't think he was listening because after the young man rang up the rest of my cereal and bars, took off the $16 and than my coupons my total was at over -$6! I knew this wasn't right, but not sure what exactly happened. The kid calls the manager over, who is now a mad and says that they can't pay me $6 and what said to the young man "What did you do?" and he replies "Exactly, what you told me to do" I said that we can ring it all up again, I honestly didn't mind waiting because I knew a mistake had been made on their part. The assistant manager is looking over the reciept and just says "You can go" You could tell he was SO mad, but apparently couldn't figure out what exactly was wrong. I don't shop at Safeway often so I'm not used to how to read their reciepts, but I think what happened was that some of my items, the other 2 sets of 4 did ring up at the sale price with the $1 off per item from the sale, but he took off extra. Anyway, I left with 40 items, for $25!! I was excited about the GREAT deal, but felt bad that it wasn't right. I talked to Shane about it all the way home and that night because I don't want to be dishonest and he kept telling me you tried and the manager made the decision to let you go and not ring you up again.

  1. Great job Ryan. Way to be patient and to stand your ground as well. Sometimes mistakes are made in your favor and in this case, it worked out great for you! I am in need of another great cereal deal here!!

  2. Thanks! I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't exactly sure since I don't know Safeway that well and either the manager couldn't figure it out on the receipt or he didn't want to because he was mad. I did though say that I would go without the $6 since I knew it wasn't right and I felt it would have been dishonest to take it, but 20 items for nothing was great for me!
