Yep, this past weekend we were in Oklahoma. It was HOT!! There only a slight breeze which did help a bit with the heat.We went out there to visit some of my extended family and attend the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Annual Pow Wow Festival which is held on the Potawatomi grounds in Shawnee, OK. Yep, I may look like a white girl, but I have some Native American blood in me. There is SO much to do at the Pow Wow and they do a great job in accommadating all different age groups. We mostly did all the things for the kids; arts and crafts, swimming, jumping castle, playground. We stayed at a hotel in Seminole, OK and drove into Shawnee for the festivities. Uncle Jack and Aunt Winnie (their my great aunt and uncle) have there camper on site as well as my cousins, so we hung out at their trailers, which was SO nice to retreat to an air conditioner in the hot heat, Declan definitely needed it. Corin was red faced the whole weekend because of the heat, but he was good a drank lots of water, which was proved for free along with hot dogs, soda, brats and yummy frybread! Cousins from Arkansas came for the Pow Wow as well. It was SO great to see everyone!
The boys with Aunt Winnie and Uncle Jack. Since my grandparents are gone, they are like the boys great grandparents even though they are their double great aunt and uncle.
Declan loved being with Aunt Winnie and Uncle Jack.

Corin experiencing how the Potawatomi people lived

I love Corin's crazy hair from being sweaty.
Declan with his "do-rag" to keep the sun off his little head, even though he was in the shade or trailer, can never be too careful.
Declan in his Potawatomi t-shirt!
Corin has SO much fun that he finally passed out! He missed the Grand Entry and Declan only lasted a while before he got too hot (It finally was cool at about 9:30-10:00) and I took him back to the trailer where Shane was and changed Declan out of his t-shirt and shorts to a onesie.
So I wasn't able to get a picture of Corin in his Potawatomi t-shirt.

My favorite is to have it with honey!
He was smily and chatting with them.
How can you not love them, they are such sweet, wonderful people.
The trip wouldn't have been complete without a little drama, which seems to be the norm around the O'Berry home lately. My Dad rented golf carts for us to use to get around the grounds, but mostly for Aunt Winnie and Uncle Jack (we mostly walked, had to work off the fry bread somehow). So, my brothers had taken out a cart and left the keys in it. (of course they won't admit to it and blame the accident on me for not watching Corin well enough in their opinion). So, Corin climbed into it and hit the gas driving it in a circle and hitting a fence! Of course I wasn't going to let Corin play on the golf cart, but everything happened SO fast, how would I have time to get him off before he hit the gas. Shane went running after him, but couldn't catch him in time and I just froze until he hit the chain-link fence and then ran over to him and grabbed him. When he hit the fence he fell forward, then backward and then forward again. His bottom lip got cut open and got teeth puncture wounds in his top lip and bottom. It was swollen and bleeding like crazy! He was SO scared, shaking and crying like crazy for quite a while. It scared all of us! But, gratefully nothing else was wrong with him. My cousin is a volunteer firefighter, then a nurse came over from another sight and last the one duty paramedic came over. I kept my composure, but wanted to just burst out into tears myself for Corin getting hurt and scared. His lips were bruised and sensitive the whole weekend but are healed. But as in Corin fashion he wanted to get back on the golf cart for a ride throughout the weekend, however he didn't climb on again by himself.
Corin cooling down with a popsicle which was melting fast.
So I wasn't able to get a picture of Corin in his Potawatomi t-shirt.
These ladies made TONS of frybread in the hot heat over the weekend!

Yay! It looks like you guys had fun :)
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad that a bruised lip was the only major casualty of that exciting episode! Kids will keep you on your toes! :) But they sure are cute!
